Whatever Is True: What These Words Really Say

A Closer Look at the Greek Words of Philippians 4:8

Sometimes a single word in Scripture carries more weight than we realize. We read Philippians 4:8 quickly, true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, worthy of praise, and assume we know what Paul means. But each of these words is built on a precise Greek term with a depth we don’t always see at first glance. Eight words. Eight invitations. Eight ways of aligning our minds with the character of Christ.

Paul begins with “true” (ἀληθῆ - alēthē), which doesn’t just mean “factually correct.” It means in accordance with reality as God defines it. It is the opposite of distortion, exaggeration, and emotional narratives that drift us away from peace. Paul begins with truth because everything else rests on it.

Then he moves to “honorable” (σεμνά - semna), a word that carries the sense of dignity and weight. It describes things that lift the mind upward-thoughts that encourage reverence rather than triviality. Not solemnity, but depth. Not heaviness, but substance.

Next comes “just” (δίκαια - dikaia), that which is righteous, fair, aligned with God’s justice. It isn’t “right” in the sense of winning an argument; it’s “right” in the way God declares what is right.

Then Paul uses “pure” (ἁγνά - from ἁγνός - hagnos), a term describing moral integrity, clean motives, and an undivided heart. Purity here isn’t naïveté; it’s clarity. A mind not clouded by cynicism or corruption.

He continues with “lovely” (προσφιλῆ - prosphilē), meaning “toward-love”, whatever naturally draws the heart toward what is good and beautiful.

Then “commendable” (εὔφημα - euphēma), meaning “worthy of praise” or “good report.” Things you would not be ashamed to attach your name to.

Paul finishes with two words that commanded attention in the Greco-Roman world:

“excellence” (ἀρετή - aretē)
“worthy of praise” (ἔπαινος - epainos)

He takes the vocabulary of virtue and redirects it toward Christ, anchoring these ideals not in empire but in the Kingdom of God.

It’s as if Paul is saying:
“If it reflects the goodness of God, let your mind dwell there.”

This list carries a quiet challenge:
Who gets to define what is honorable, lovely, or excellent?
If we allow culture or emotion to define these categories, our thinking will drift. But if we allow God to define them, our minds become instruments of worship.

Lingering on these words reveals something beautiful: Paul isn’t offering a thought-policing list. He’s inviting us into a way of seeing the world that aligns with the heart of Christ.

Eight words.
Eight ways of training the mind toward the good.
Eight doorways into the peace of God.

What might shift in us if we allowed God, not culture, to define what we consider beautiful, worthy, and good?
